Hailing from Reading in the UK, Version Big-Fi sound nothing like anything
the city has ever produced. Putting classic songwriting aside, this
twosome bring wired-up punk energy, super heavy reggae grooves and
booming dub echoes to the forefront, as well as taking in influences
as diverse and eclectic as King Tubby, The Clash, Massive Attack,
Dreadzone, Joe Gibbs, Suicide, Scientist, Dead 60s, On-U Sound,
Death In Vegas, The Specials, John Barry & Pop Will Eat Itself they
have a foot firmly implanted in the 21st Century taking Dub forwards
and upwards.

Version Big-Fi have always been determined to stay totally separate
from the insular music scene around them. "We want to make tea," says
bassist Papa Sparks. "Our songs should be sung at every social gathering
in the country. We're not interested in sloganeering, posturing or coffee
in the conventional sense."

Version Big-Fi - Tone (beats/dubs) and Papa Sparks (bass/samples) -
have been honing their radical assault since late 2006.
Previously releasing 2 singles in the UK under the Dubtronic label,
the bands first full-length studio album Everything But was produced
at Big-Fi Studios in Reading.

The Alton Ellis Mix - Reggaexx

From the dude that brought us "The Distinctly Jamaican Sounds Christmas Mix" comes a tribute to the king of rocksteady - Alton Ellis:

"when I first read that Alton Ellis was about to undergo cancer treatment in London I immediately said a prayer for the man who has been revered by many as the "Godfather of Rocksteady." I then went to my music and put together an Alton Ellis mix."

Alton Ellis:
"By 1966 the red-hot double-time ska beat had given birth virtually overnight to a much slower, hiccupping rhythm dubbed "rocksteady," and it was Alton who was to be its midwife. "One evening in the studio," Alton recalls, "the bass man didn't show up. So Jackie Mittoo, the keyboardist, had to play the bass pattern on the piano with his left hand, but he couldn't hold it steady, and we all thought the line was so fresh and nice. When the bass player turned up next time, Jackie insisted that he play what Jackie was playing with his left hand. That's how rocksteady was born; we called it so that night." (reggaetrain.com)

Tone396 - Where Is JamRock?

Howdy again - I say this every year but I really want to put some effort back into the Boogie Shed and drop down a few more posts (if I can!)

First up some more mashup trickery from Tone396, part of the UK based DUB collective Version Big-Fi.

This is what you get .... Damien Marley vs Black Eyed Peas vs Def Leppard vs Buster Rhymes vs Scratch Master Tone mashed up and spat out inna 396 styleee.

Download Tone396 - Where Is JamRock? MP3 here

Tone made it almost a year ago for some mixing game that never got past the demo mark ... and then recently decided it would be good as a video so made that and released it:
