DUBSTA chapter 1

Posted in

Hi all - I haven't bought much in the way of new music this month - all the muso's must be too busy playing at muddy fests or sunning themselves on small islands!

So this gave me the chance to put a dub plate selection together - my kind of easy-listening music! I don't pretend to be an authority on dub - but I've been picking up these platters from shacks like Daddy Kool since the early eighties.

You'll find there's absolutely no structure or reason to the track ordering because it was very much a random pick and blend scenario - any connections between the tracks I would put down to the work of Jah!

enjoy!

****Don't forget to leave a comment while you're there or come and 'be-friend-me' at my MySpace!

Loads of thankyou's & bigups go out with this mix:
Firstly a huge mucho gratitudes to DJ Disse, who sent me a promo of his debut album "when I`m bored, I change colour" due for release this june 2007 - absolutely stunning work! There are two tracks taken from it that feature in the selection.

Also the maestro sent me a 12" which he was the 'brains' behind, 'Under my Dub' - a Stones re-dub - another corker!

Secondly I would like to a praise-up Billy aka the undercover hippy - for giving me his permission to use his awesome 'money money money' track. Hopefully you'll be able to catch up with the ever travelling man at a festival near you!

Thirdly a big thankyou to Jannis of jakarta records for helping out with the 'Drummies/Fireball' little seven.

And lastly to Mark Vidler (Go Home Productions) for supplying the 'top' & 'tails' for the mix!

Apart from that it's the usual funky/dubby selection here; some new, some classic, some old...
enjoy...

GLASTONBURY TICKETS AND ALL THAT!

Sorry about being away for a while - Easter holidays and all that!
During the break had a little fun and frustration in having a go at getting Glasto tickets. The on-line ticket portal seemed to be constantly down that Sunday!

Since the BIG one is coming into view I thought I'd post myself a few reminders:

First up 'Glastonbury The Movie' shot in 1993 comes out in July as a three disc special box set. Me and my bro were in the original film briefly - so looking forward to the extra footage.

Apparently on disk 2 there’s even a way of playing it so that it runs for 38 hours. They shot the lot; entire gigs, interviews, backstage, but most importantly the comings and goings of all the people who make Glastonbury what it is!

For more info visit Glastonbury The Movie @ MySpace

Here are the trailers:

It's funny for a 'joke' a couple of years back (I had a bit more time on my hands then!) I had the film on VHS and cut together all the atmospheric bits to a silly soundtrack I put together.

So dusting off the cobwebs here's the video:

'It's Alright Now / Um Pessado Bossa' - DJ Graham B
12 " / Freestyle FSR045
Tracklisting :
A1. It's Alright Now
B1. Um Pessado Bossa

Regarded by many as a pioneer on the Dutch music scene DJ Graham B moved to Amsterdam in the late 80s and helped kick start the house scene there, promoting parties and radio stations, etc. He also co-founded and produced the first two albums of the ever-popular New Cool Collective . As one half of Jazz Juice, DJ Graham B has notched up some of the biggest selling singles on the Freestyle label and has carved a niche for their own style of electronic infused samba and Latin music - winning over fans such as Gilles Peterson, Mr Scruff and Annie Mac along the way.

Following the huge success of his debut single "Sambamadness", Graham steps out on his own once again to deliver another dancefloor bomb. Utilising some familiar samples and a kicking hook "It's Alright Now" is a peak time crowd pleaser of epic proportions - already road tested at Messin Around and various other sessions around the country. Over on the flip, "Um Pesado Bossa" picks up where previous single "Riot In Rio" left off - samba style percussion, a funkin bass and some grooving guitar work.

'Drummies / Fireball' - Leeroy of Saian Supa Crew
7" / JAKARTA007
Tracklisting :
A1. Drummies
B1. Fireball

Jakarta Records are back with another limited seven, this time by a main player from French hip hoppers Saian Supa Crew. Here Leeroy delivers a Bollywood infected funk-breaks track "Drummies" (a rework of an old Ananda Shankar cinematic sitar-funk classic) featuring uptempo beats, sitar and flute plus the odd sample thrown in here and there. This is sure to get the dancefloor rockin! On the flip with "Fireball" we stick to the Indian-flavoured sound, but the tempo is slightly slower and the beats chunkier, creating a b-boy essential.

Under My Dub / It Will Never Dubben Again - RS / TH
12" / Balearic Biscuits BB05
Tracklisting :
A1. RS - under my dub
B1. TH - it will never dubben again

Balearic Biscuits presents two rock records re-edited in two very different ways for extended club play. "Under My Dub" is of course "Under My Thumb", an early song by the biggest rock band in the world The Rolling Stones. This mix dubs out most of Jagger's vocal and uses the main marimba hook of the track to create an evocative, repetitive dance-rock theme. "It Will Never Dubben Again" is a melancholic edit of Tim Hardin's gentle 1966 album track "It'll Never Happen Again", an early jazzy folk-rock touchstone. [Piccadilly]

The classic Rollin Stones ‘Under my Thumb’ comes under the radar of the Balearic Biscuits label for a remix. Looping the start adding their own delay effects and utilising the vocal to extenuate the remix. On the flip we have the sublime Tim Harding with his ‘It will never happen again’ dubbed and echoed to the max. [Fat City]

Let It Happen - Beatfanatic Remix / Mekano - Vangelis / Turelli
12" / GAMM gamm037
Tracklisting :
A1. Vangelis - Let it Happen (Beatfanatic's Balearic Boogie Remix)
B1. Turelli - Mekano

This latest addition to the GAMM family provides a blissful new version of an old Balearic fave courtesy of the Beatfanatic. "Let It Happen" by Vangelis and Demis Roussos is given a delicate drum beat and aural massage, turning it from an on obscure album track to a 12-minute rave-up! B-side "Mekano" by Turelli sounds like authentic Italo disco alright and has some great hooks, but we're quietly confident that this is a disco production of the 'nu' persuasion. [Piccadilly]

Stockholms favourite Balearic experimentalist delivers the goods once more for GAMM reworking a different disco gem for each side of this 12! Let It Happen is a sprawling mid tempo disco epic - the perfect end of night anthem perfectly re-made by the Swedish maestro. The Turelli edit on the flip cruises into uptempo boogie territory with a fun and frivolous early 80s club sound.... [Fat City]

Music Blog of the Week: Back In The Day

While listening to Dangerscouse's new mix on b00mb0x I discovered a track from the Coldcut stable I hadn't heard before; Steinski & Mass Media - It's Up To You (Television Mix) - Cheers Stu!

With the help of Google I tracked it down and found it was out as a Ninja Tune 12" (ZEN12 011) in 1992 and on the Coldcut and Steinski - 'No Rights Given or Implied: The Original Samplers' album (Bond Street BS 001) from 1993. This led me to find this music blog full of old school joints including that album to download! Enjoy

'Be Thankful For What You've Got' lyrics:
Though you may not drive a great big cadillac
Gangster whitewalls tv antenna in the back
You may not have a car at all
But just remember brothers and sisters
You can still stand tall
Just be thankful for what you've got
Though you may not drive a great big cadillac
Diamonds in the back, sunroof top, diggin the scene
With the gangster lean
For what you've got

You may not have a car at all
But just remember brothers and sisters
You can still stand tall
Just be thankful for what you've got
Diamonds in the back, sunroof top, diggin' the scene
With the gangster lean ooh ooh ooh
Though you may not drive a great big cadillac
Gangster whitewalls tv antenna in the back
You may not have a car at all
But just remember brothers and sisters
You can still stand tall
Just be thankful for what you've got

(Music) Blog of the Week: Peppermint Iguana

Posted in

This blog is not exactly a music blog (even though there are some great links to some excellent music here!) but the 'back stage' to the PEPPERMINT IGUANA HQ. Lots of info and reviews on Gigs, Festivals, Parties, Cd's, Books, Protests, travels, photography and Cardiff City FC. The blogs run by the word-smith and maestro Clint Iguana. Clint has been been giving out recommendations for this blog and the music + mixes over the last year(s?) so it was about time to repay the man! Click on the link and see what's going on in the welsh valleys - much more than here in sleepy Cambridge!

PEPPERMINT IGUANA BLOG

This is what Clint says about PEPPERMINT IGUANA:

"It first sprung into life in 1995 as a 'collective', a gang of mates from the Blackwood area of the South Wales valleys, putting on gigs, publishing a fanzine and running a website. We were motivated by the fact we had to travel miles to see most of the bands we liked and there was virtually nowhere to read about the scene that we loved. Over the next few years the gang put on 20 or so gigs with a mixture of local bands and big names from the 'underground' music scene; such as Tofu Love Frogs, P.A.I.N., Inner Terrestrials, Citizen Fish, Headmix, Tarrantism, Dubmerge, Astralaisa, New Model Army; published 4 fanzines and went through several versions of the website. Not exactly prolific, but we had a laugh and brought a little bit of fun to to the valleys. Life took its toll though, births, deaths, marriages, divorces, new jobs, redundancies, moving houses, going back to college... we had it all within the crew. So here we are, 2007 and Peppermint Iguana is not quite a collective anymore, just a very small band of radical groovers still trying to let the world know that there is a revolution going on and it's got a cracking soundtrack. We have been busy of late though and a new and improved website should be hitting cyberspace early 2007"

SHED TUNES OF THE WEEK (15.01.06)

Posted in
Hi there, trying to get back to old ways - I actually bought some records for the first time this year!
These are some of the sounds coming from the SHED this week !

Here are the links and they will all be on a mix to download soon -
if I get the time ;-)

The Dynamics: Seven Nation Army / Move On Up 7"
Label: Big Smile Catalogue number: BIGs001
Country of origin: FRA

Two huge reggae cover versions of classic tracks. White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army gets a deep dub mix with an amazing trio of vocals from the Dynamics. On the flip the Dynamics cover the classic Curtis Mayfield Move On Up. Keeping the sweet mellow flavour of the original whilst cranking up the reggae flavour. This hyper-rare 45 is attracting some serious action and is destined to become a bit of a collectors item.

The Dynamics @ MySpace
The Dynamics website

(Not) J*Star: Reggae Rigby / Reggae La La 12"
Label: White Catalogue number: NMT001
Country of origin: UK

The very hard to come by reggae version of the Beatles Elanor Rigby turns up on a twelve inch. Its a very well done re-edit, with Paul McCartneys vocal chopped to fit the reggae backing perfectly, you would almost think Revolver was the Beatles lost dubbed out classic... Flip over and there is a reggae version of the Fugee's Fuu-Gee-La. It was first listed at Fat City by J*Star, they later found out it was NOT the work of J*Star, but of another mysterious reggae relicker, so thats why it's down as (Not) J*Star !!!
****With a bit of google-research I found a post on the House of Cuss forum dated November 26, 2004 (!), that the "Rigby Reggae" mashup was done by the French duo Loo & Placido. So the track's a couple years old !
Loo & Placido @ MySpace

DJ Shadow: This Time (I'm Gonna Try It My Way) / Dub 7"
Label: Island
Catalogue number:1716790
Country of origin: USA

DJ Shadow's new album The Outsider has been getting quite a lot of negative feedback recently but this track taken from it is a gem of a 7". The story goes that DJ Shadow (or a friend) found a dusty old unnamed 60s / 70s soul acetate in the studio a while back, listened to it and was so impressed that he based this track on it. To re-create that sun-dappled Memphis blue-eyed soul sound he hooked up with the Heliocentrics (Stark Reality's Nesta and funk 45 hero and drummer Malcolm Catto, ex of Mo'Wax) who add live playing. Then, just to ice that cake a bit more, he's drafted in Wil Malone to arrange the rather emotive strings. If you didn't know already, Malone is famous for the strings on Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy", as well The Verve's "Bitter Sweet Symphony" and a few cult soundtracks too. On the flip there's a slow and low dub version for the beat diggers, which is also pretty damn fine. Don't let this sneak under the radar because it's gonna be your first killer secret weapon of 2007!

JAMES BROWN R.I.P

Posted in

What a shock - the legend + GODFATHER of Soul James Brown died yesterday.
This magic man opened the door to sound of funk and it's funky flavours.
I hope he teaches the old man upstairs how to dance !

Here's a couple of mp3's to give thanks to the main man:

Soulful Christmas - James Brown ***mp3***
(Jazzman :::
JM. 036 (JMXMAS. 001) ::: 2004)
Published by Unichappell Music Inc / Dynatone Publishing Company.
1968 UMG Recordings Inc.

The Payback Mix - James Brown ***mp3***
(Keep On Doing What You're Doing But Make It Funky)
Mixed by Matt Black & Jonathan More (Coldcut)
(PolyGram 1988)

Out in 1988 (18 years ago !) blending together some of his many great moments and has become the definitive and authorised mix of his greatest hits.
With the help of relative newcomers at the time, Matt Black & Jonathan More, later to become the awesome Coldcut, this single reached No. 12 in the charts that April and the live mix apparently received an eight minute standing ovation at the DMC 'Disco' Mix Championships at the Albert Hall the same year !!!

*****N.B. These mp3's will be available for this week only *****

James Brown - I Feel Good

Again I haven't posted on here for absolutely ages.....summer holidays reducing me to old fashion dial-up and waiting for my little boy to arrive (12 days overdue as I write this!).....so to help me relax I've been cut+pasting some of the tracks that have been played a lot in the boogie-shed during the heat wave. I've even had time to mash up Mr BUSH with the classic 'Imagine' (Does that make ME a terrorist I wonder ?!) As with the last collection a selection of tropical beats with a splash of cold beers on the beach kind of chill out soundz ! Notably three recent tracks from the Idjut Boys new Cottage label.
