Christmas TUNE: Smerins Anti-Social Club's ska version of Walking In The Air

Loving this ska version of Walking In The Air on Lenodd's recent xmix - The 12 days Selector

"On 7th December 2010, Nemone asked her BBC 6 Music listeners to vote on a Christmas song for Smerins Anti-Social Club to record. In less than a week the band had arranged, recorded and produced a ska-influenced version of Walking In The Air, Howard Blake's composition made famous by The Snowman animation of 1982."

"Lee Perry… The Upsetter… Scratch Perry… One of the most legendary producers in the history of reggae. If any one person deserves a mix of just their material it’s him. I make no claim as to this being completist, chronological, covering all eras… it’s just some of my favorite Lee Perry moments put together. All classics to me… but if I had to pick one, “Brotherly Love” could be on repeat until the day I die and I’d be okay with that..." Ghostbeard

Trinidadian mix - A Man Called Warwick

Setting out the vibes this Friday is a gentle guest mix from the peeps at Soundway Records...

"To mark the impending release of the CYRIL DIAZ 10″ on Soundway Records we are posting a mix of rare and hard to come by 1950s & 60s tracks from Trinidad assembled by long-time friend of the label A Man Called Warwick. The history of his legendary “TURNING POINT” sessions in Toronto, Canada, perfectly mirrors that of Soundway, and label boss Miles Cleret has been a long term guest over there for nearly ten years. Over that time Turning point has gone from being a strictly jazz & funk party to probably the best place in the world to hear a unique selection of vintage tropical music from Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America. With Warwick’s meticulous attention to detail in terms of venue, decoration, promotion and most importantly amazing sound quality, it’s consistently been the most enjoyable party to visit.

Toronto having one of the largest ex-patriot Trinidad communities outside of the Caribbean it’s a town that has yielded many great records over the years and Warwick has one of the most enviable collections anywhere in the world of this stuff. The tracks on this 10 inch were all first heard there and through Warwick we were able to license the material from the EP directly from Bobby Diaz – Cyril’s son, now living in Buffalo, NY. Miles Cleret will be the next guest DJ at Turning Point, for his 10th visit, – the first since the move from the old Gladstone Hotel address to The Garrison, 1197 Dundas St W. Enjoy the mix and if you’re ever in Toronto be sure to check if it’s a Turning Point weekend."

"Experimentalist music producer and remix mastermind Diplo teams up with Greensleeves Records to remix, reload and re-release some of Reggae’s greatest classics on Riddimentary – Diplo Selects Greensleeves. This 15-track compilation will bring selected Reggae anthems to new ears as Diplo infuses his unique genre-bending flavor into the mix. Known for his electronic dub musical styling and as one-half of world renowned production team Major Lazer, Thomas Wesley Pentz aka Diplo lends his eclectic ear and considerable talents as a Reggae selector to Riddimentary. The continuous blended mix covers over 20 years of revoluntionary Jamaican and UK hits from the top producers in Dub, Reggae and Dancehall from the 1980s and 1990s. The retro flavor and historical context of these selections shine a light on Diplo's production influences and expert knowledge of the Reggae genre. Choosing anthems such as "Night Nurse" by Gregory Isaacs, "Police In Helicopter" by John Holt, "Telephone Love" by J.C. Lodge and "Anarexol" by Eek-A-Mouse, Riddimentary sees Diplo not only selecting through the Greensleeves catalog but also placing his imprint on its legacy." GLEENSLEEVES BLOG
