This king size dub album is a lion of a record roaring with dub plates, rarities and obscure gems. Dominated by the drums of Sly Dunbar it represents a golden period when Channel One held the key to much of what was to follow in reggae music. The sound of Channel One, which achieved worldwide prominence in the mid-seventies reggae boom, wielded an unparalleled influence throughout the world. Its origins were based on Ernest and Jo Jo Hookim’s lifelong love of music and their fascination with the way it was made. They were true visionaries and it is impossible to overstate the influence that the brothers’ custom built studio wielded on the development of Jamaican music. The Channel One drum sound was totally unique and Sly Dunbar, along with engineers Ernest Hookim and Barnabas, would spend days perfecting it. As its fame grew all kinds of people, including Sting and The Clash, came to the studio to try and capture some of the magic that was created down on Maxfield Avenue.

The magical sound became familiar through hundreds of reggae recordings and many of the best tunes were released on the Hookim’s Well Charge and Disco Mix labels and on the Channel One label itself. This is where the material on ‘Drum Sound’ is sourced from: seventeen killer tracks that showcase the very best of Channel One.

This is probably the strongest dub album yet to be issued on Pressure Sounds packed full of music that no Sound System was and is complete with out including a King Tubby’s cut to Junior Byles’ timeless ‘Fade Away’ and the iconic ‘Kunta Kinte’. Never before released ‘Kunta Kinte’ could only be heard on a dub plate, notably on Jah Shaka’s legendary Sound System, which still plays Kunta Kinte dubs to this day.

Beautifully mastered and carefully restored with all of Pressure Sounds’ customary attention to detail the album is available on double vinyl and compact disc in the usual eye catching packaging replete with a wealth of images and information. There will also be an extra special limited edition seven inch release to coincide with the album starring two further dub cuts of Kunta Kinte’ not available on the album… or anywhere else.

Here's Pee Wee Ellis' version of how Cold Sweat came about and was recorded...
"After one of the shows, one night somewhere, James called me into the dressing room and grunted a bass line of a rhythmic thing (demonstrates), which turned out to be "Cold Sweat." I was very much influenced by Miles Davis and had been listening to "So What" six or seven years earlier and that crept into the making of "Cold Sweat." You could call it subliminal, but the horn line is based on Miles Davis' "So What." I wrote that on the bus between New York and Cincinnati. The next day we pulled up in front of King Records studio, got off the bus, got in the studio, set up, and I went over the rhythm with the band. By the time we got the groove going, James showed up, added a few touches--changed the guitar part, which made it real funky--had the drummer do something different. He was a genius at it. Between the two of us, we put it together one afternoon. He put the lyrics on it. The band set up in a semicircle in the studio with one microphone. It was recorded live in the studio. One take. It was like a performance. We didn't do overdubbing."

Coming this fall, the LONG awaited debut album from latin funk collective Brownout. Jazzman Records - What Is Wrong With Groovin'

We started our 7" reissue series a few years back with one thing in mind; to make the rarest, most obscure and grooviest records available to all on beautiful 7" vinyl. Many of the recordings chosen were little known by music lovers but were so good that they deserved to be heard by the many people with an ear for the good stuff living around the world. This idea still stands to this day, and we continue to seek out great music that has long since been forgotten or has proved very difficult to find in the original format.

Now our Jazzman 7" releases themselves have proven hard to locate by some, and have proved useless to those who do not own a turntable, so now the time has come to make some of the best cuts available on CD for the first time. This CD it chronicles the first 10 releases, and includes the elusive first Jazzman 7", now long out of print, 'Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child' by Kathleen Emery. As the first release on the label, we had to make sure it was a good one - it can't have been a bad choice as demand for the record continues to this day. The complete track listing is as follows:

The album has turned into a classic and is described as a milestone for the downbeat scene. Collaborations with UB40, Izzy Stradlin (of Guns N'Roses), Seal and, most spectacularly, the Clash bound reggae artist Mikey Dread, who has died of a brain tumour aged 54, to a fulfilling career as one of the Caribbean's leading musical ambassadors. Even without such big name associations, however, his reputation might have spread when, in the 1970s, reggae, once dismissed as "skinhead music", became acceptable globally to a white intelligentsia.

Worlds away from the Jamaican shanty towns where reggae supposedly originated, Dread - born Michael Campbell - grew up with his four siblings in relative affluence in Port Antonio, on the island's north-east coast. He excelled in physics at Titchfield high school, and after graduating from Kingston technical college was recognised as something of a console boffin when taken on in 1976 by the Jamaican Broadcasting Corporation (JBC).

After Dread had criticised the station's cautious output of bland, and mostly foreign, pop, it was decided to let him host a weekly four-hour record show, entitled Dread at the Controls, during the late-night Saturday shift. There was not much executive enthusiasm for the idea, but it was a huge success. The discs - almost all reggae - were only part of the appeal to young listeners as dreadlocked, bearded Dread developed a fast-mouthed spiel, or "toasting", over highly rhythmic backing tracks, freighted with sound effects. In 1977, Dread was voted Jamaica's radio personality of the year.

He also branched out into record production, scoring in the local charts notably with Barber Saloon, a blend of rapping and singing that became known as the "sing-jay" style. In 1978 he performed at Reggae Sunsplash, Jamaica's most prestigious annual music event, though the year ended in disputes with fellow JBC broadcasters that forced his resignation. After founding his own production company, DATC, Dread notched up hit records for other artists while maintaining his own run of Top 20 entries. These included Breakdown the Walls - heard in the 1980 ITV drama Walcott and the US movie The Rift - and the albums Dread at the Controls and African Anthem, each containing jingles from his old JBC programme.

An exploratory promotional trip to England in 1979 was extended to enable Dread to complete a course at the National Broadcasting School in London and support the Clash on a round-Britain tour early in 1980. The group made use of his studio skills, most conspicuously on the million-selling Sandinista! triple-album, and granted him vocal pride of place on Rockers Galore and Radio One, respective B-sides of its spin-off singles.

In 1982 Dread narrated Channel 4's Deep Roots Music series and created its Jungle Signal theme tune. He was also to script and present the channel's 10-part Rockers Roadshow (1983). He also furthered the cause of reggae with a stint at VPRO Radio in the Netherlands, and expeditions to Japan and continental Europe with UB40, for whom he oversaw the mixing of the successful single Red Red Wine and other items.

Still a determined self-improver, in 1984 Dread enrolled at what was then the North London Polytechnic to study advanced recording technology. Later, he gained honours degrees in music, media and business studies. He was not, however, metamorphosing into a cerebral academic: he continued to broadcast on radio and make personal appearances at, for example, the 1984 Miss Black UK Pageant in Birmingham. He also joined the board of the Caribbean Satellite Network in Miami, and taped voiceovers for TV commercials.

As a pop entertainer, he headlined tours of north America and took potshots at the charts with such releases as the 1990 single, The Source of Your Divorce. He managed well-received spots at the 2002 Montreux jazz festival and at Glastonbury in 2004, and was in demand on what amounted to a niche nostalgia circuit peopled by the likes of Bunny Wailer, Kid Creole and former personnel of Bob Marley's Wailers. The much reissued Mikey Dread's Best Sellers CD retrospective always did brisk business on auditorium merchandising stalls.

He was back in the UK on a short tour in 2006 and is survived by his wife Monika, their infant son Zylen Jahlight and six children from previous relationships.

It is said, that DUB originated in King Tubby's studio when he was doing a sound check and forgot to turn of the echo before pressing the "play" button. We all know where it went to, otherwise we wouldn't be checking out Dubsta's second Podcast anyway.

"Did King Tubby know, what he was listening to when he first heard the drum and bass with echo's on what was said to be a sound check in his studio somewhere in the late 1960's, early 70's?

Did he know, he was about to launch a completely new discipline in studio technology that would forever change the face of not just Reggae Music, but in fact all contemporary forms of (digital) Dance Music?

The answer we will probably never know.

We do know, that DUB indeed has become just that: the foundation for many styles as well as a discipline within Reggae Music that continues to puzzle the minds of many producers until this very day.

We also know, that this can all be experienced by listening to the first chapter of the two-part Dubsta Series.

After an initial introduction, we're taken straight to Jamaica where Prince Jammy and King Tubby give us some crucial DUB vibes, only to move forward to the UK where the Mad Professor is at the Control Tower and takes DUB even further.

Just three names, and don't think it's all about them either.

Dubsta Chapter One takes us to times and places where many don't think they can find some crucial DUB as their minds are mostly in the past anyway.
